Apple has confirmed its next event for September 9 at 10 a.m. PT, under the tagline “Surprise and shine.” The company’s own events page tells you how to watch it — apple.com or the Apple TV app — and nothing else. It names no products, no prices, and no specifications. Everything else circulating this week is rumor, and it is worth separating the two before Wednesday.
Most previews of this event are written for people who already buy iPhones. This one is not. Here is what an Apple September event looks like from the Android side of the fence, and which parts of it actually touch what you buy.
The Apple September 9 event is missing its most competitive phone
The single most consequential thing about this event may be a phone that is reportedly not at it. Apple is widely reported to be splitting the iPhone 18 line across two seasons. The iPhone 18 Pro and 18 Pro Max are expected on September 9, with the standard iPhone 18, the iPhone 18e and a second-generation iPhone Air pushed to spring 2027. MacRumors reported in June that supplier comments appeared to confirm no standard iPhone 18 this year, and its iPhone 18 roundup now lists the fall 2026 slate as the 18 Pro, Pro Max and foldable, with the iPhone 18, 18e and Air 2 in spring 2027.
Treat that as a strong rumor rather than a fact until Wednesday. But if it holds, it matters more to Android buyers than any foldable does. The non-Pro iPhone is the model that actually competes with a Galaxy S26, a Pixel 11 or a OnePlus flagship on price. Take it off the shelf until spring and Apple has no new phone in that band for roughly six months.
That is not obviously good news for you. A competitor sitting out a price tier removes pressure to sharpen deals in it. MacRumors also expects Apple to raise iPhone prices this cycle, having already raised Mac and iPad prices in June 2026. Android OEMs read Apple’s price list closely when setting their own. A higher Apple ceiling gives every one of them more room to charge you more.
The chip and modem story is the part that reaches Android
Two rumored components are worth more attention than the camera bullet points. The iPhone 18 Pro is expected to use an A20 Pro built on a 2nm process, and 9to5Mac reports it should carry Apple’s own C2 cellular modem.
Both have knock-on effects. Apple has historically bought out the first wave of a new TSMC node, which is a real factor in when Snapdragon and Dimensity parts on the same process reach Android phones and at what cost. The modem matters differently. Every further step Apple takes off Qualcomm silicon shrinks one of Qualcomm’s largest customer relationships. Qualcomm’s leverage over Android OEMs is partly a function of its overall scale. None of that shows up on a spec sheet you can buy, but it shapes the phones you will be offered in 2027.
A foldable iPhone, seven years late and reportedly pricier
The headline rumor is Apple’s first foldable iPhone. Its name is genuinely unsettled. MacRumors puts it plainly in its iPhone 18 roundup: it is not clear what Apple plans to call the device, and people have settled on “iPhone Fold” or “iPhone Ultra” in the meantime. Neither is Apple’s word, so we are calling it what it is.
The reported hardware is a book-style foldable with a titanium frame and Touch ID in the power button instead of Face ID. MacRumors gives the screens as 5.5 inches closed and 7.6 inches open. 9to5Mac reports slightly wider ranges, 5.3 to 5.5 inches outside and 7.6 to 7.8 inches inside. 9to5Mac puts the expected starting price somewhere around $1,999, potentially climbing toward $2,500.
At the low end of both ranges, that is the same size class as the Galaxy Z Fold 8 that Samsung announced on July 22 and put on sale August 5 at $1,900 for 256GB. So the pitch, if the rumors land, is Apple arriving seven years after the first Galaxy Fold with the same screen dimensions, no telephoto camera according to MacRumors, a fingerprint reader in place of its own face unlock, and a higher price. Samsung ships that phone today with Android 17, One UI 9 and a seven-year update commitment.
That is not a reason to feel smug. Apple entering a category tends to expand it, and a mainstream foldable buyer is good for Android foldable prices over time. It is a reason to be skeptical of Wednesday’s framing when it arrives.
What else to watch
Apple Watch Series 12 and Apple Watch Ultra 4 are expected, with 9to5Mac reporting new processors and health features rather than redesigns. AirPods 5 are also anticipated. The more useful item for an Android household is the iOS 27 release date, which Apple typically gives at this event. That date sets the clock on cross-platform behavior, including the AirDrop and Quick Share interoperability that Pixel 7 and Pixel 8 owners began reporting this week.
