Hikers Stranded on Mount Shasta After Planning the Climb With Gemini

Three hikers had to be pulled off Mount Shasta in northern California after a summit attempt they planned largely with Google’s Gemini. The Siskiyou County Sheriff’s Office says the men told a deputy they leaned heavily on the AI assistant for the route and for what to pack. Authorities say the advice left them short of food and water. All three were recovered safely, but the sheriff has since used the case to make a point about where AI belongs in trip planning.

What happened on the Clear Creek Route

The three men, from Roseville, California, made camp at about 8,400 feet on Saturday, August 29. They set out for the summit at roughly 3 a.m. the next morning carrying daypacks. Mount Shasta tops out at 14,179 feet.

They expected an eight-hour climb. They reached the summit around 7 p.m., many hours past the noon turnaround time that is standard advice on the mountain. About an hour into the descent they lost the route and called the sheriff’s dispatch for directions. They then drifted off the Clear Creek Route into Mud Creek Canyon in the dark. One of the men fell and hurt his knee, and the group spent the night stranded in the drainage.

U.S. Forest Service climbing rangers reached them the following morning. Siskiyou County Search and Rescue volunteers also responded, and everyone got back to the trailhead without further incident.

Where Gemini comes into it

This part is worth stating carefully, because it is reported speech twice over. After the rescue, the hikers told the sheriff’s office they had relied on Gemini for information about the Clear Creek Route and for advice on supplies. The sheriff’s office then said that guidance had them carrying less food and water than the climb actually demanded. The sheriff’s office account, and the reporting built on it, do not include the prompts or Gemini’s replies. What exists is the hikers’ description of what they asked and what they then carried.

Even with that caveat, the failure mode is recognizable to anyone who has used a chatbot for something practical. Gemini answers a question about a mountain route in the same confident, tidy register it uses for a recipe. It does not know your fitness, your pace, the snow conditions that week, or that the group is made up of novice climbers. It rarely volunteers that it might be wrong, and it does not tell you to go ask a ranger.

Siskiyou County Sheriff Jeremiah LaRue put it plainly to KRCR: “I think that AI can be used as a research tool, but when you’re going to go put yourself in a potentially life or death scenario, just make sure that you’re getting all of the information that you can from the experts.”

The gap between the marketing and the disclaimer

Google sells Gemini as an assistant you can hand a task to. It is now in front of an enormous audience across Search, Android and the Gemini app, and androidpure covered the assistant passing a billion users in August. The safety framing is much smaller: a disclaimer telling you to double-check its answers.

That is a lopsided arrangement, and it is the reader’s problem rather than Google’s. The product is presented as capable enough to hand your planning to. The liability is handed back to you in a disclaimer. A packing list is exactly the kind of output where the difference bites, because it looks complete. There is no visible seam between the part the model actually knows and the part it filled in to give you a clean answer.

If you are planning something outdoors

Use an assistant for what it is good at, which is orientation. Ask it what a route is called, roughly how long people take, what season it is usually climbed in. Then take every number to a source that is accountable for it.

  • Ranger stations: for Mount Shasta, the sheriff’s office points people to the Mount Shasta ranger station, which has current conditions the model does not.
  • Turnaround times: treat these as hard rules set by daylight and weather, not as suggestions to be optimized.
  • Food, water and gear: size these for the trip going wrong, not for the schedule you hope to keep. This group planned for eight hours and was out overnight.
  • Offline maps and a beacon: a phone that has lost signal cannot ask Gemini anything.

None of this makes the assistant useless. It makes it a starting point that has to be checked against people who are answerable for being wrong, which a chatbot is not.
