Google Says the RCS Error 3100 Fix Needs Carriers, Not Just an Update

Google has gone on the record about the Google Messages RCS failures throwing error code 3100, and the answer explains why the workarounds circulating for the past week have been so inconsistent: the fix is not entirely Google’s to ship. In a statement given to Android Authority, Google said: “We’re aware of this issue and are working with our carrier partners to get it fixed as soon as possible.”

What the statement actually tells you

Three things, none of them a date.

First, this is being handled as a platform problem rather than a per-user misconfiguration. That is the practically useful part. RCS registration depends on your carrier’s IMS provisioning as much as on anything in the Messages app, and if Google has escalated to carrier partners, the failure is on that seam — which is exactly why clearing Carrier Services data works for one person and does nothing for the next.

Second, Android Authority reports that the error “appears to largely impact users setting up new devices or switching carriers”, narrowing who should expect to be hit. If your RCS has been working continuously on the same phone and the same network, this is not your bug.

Third, there is no timeline. “As soon as possible” is not a commitment, and a fix that requires coordination across carriers historically lands unevenly — network by network, region by region — rather than all at once via a Play Store update.

What to do until it lands

If you are affected, the honest advice has changed slightly. Cycling through fixes repeatedly is now the less sensible option, because a server-side or carrier-side change will re-register RCS on its own once it arrives. Leaving RCS switched off in the meantime at least gives you predictable SMS fallback instead of a half-registered state where messages quietly fail.

The step-by-step sequence worth trying once — update Messages, disable RCS, clear Carrier Services data, reboot, re-enable — is in our guide to Google Messages error 3100, along with the setup path that has been avoiding the problem outright for people migrating to a new phone.
