Google Says the Pixel Watch 1 Health Warning Was a Bug, Not the End

Pixel Watch 1 owners who opened Google Health on Tuesday were told their watch was about to stop syncing sleep and workout data. Google says that message should never have appeared. In a support forum post, the company called it a “bug where some users received this card incorrectly” and said the “Pixel Watch 1 remains fully supported” — as reported by 9to5Google, which spotted the confirmation.

What the Google Health warning actually said

The card that appeared for some Pixel Watch 1 owners read:

Update your watch to keep using Google Health

Your watch is running an older version of Wear OS and will soon stop syncing sleep and workout data with Google Health. Update your watch to the latest version to keep tracking your health.

That is an unusually alarming thing to read on a device you bought to track your health, and the instruction it gave was impossible to follow. There is no newer version to update to. Google Health requires Wear OS 4 or newer on Pixel Watch hardware, according to Android Authority, and the original Pixel Watch is on Wear OS 5.1 — comfortably past that bar. The warning was checking something, but not the thing it claimed to be checking. Android Authority reports the erroneous card has already been fixed.

“Fully supported” is not the same as “still being updated”

Here is the part worth sitting with, because it is true regardless of the bug. The last software update the Pixel Watch 1 received arrived in October 2025: Wear OS 5.1, based on Android 15, carrying a security patch dated 5 June 2025. That is where the watch sits today, and where it is likely to stay.

The original Pixel Watch shipped with a guarantee of three years of updates. It ran Wear OS 3.5 (Android 11), then Wear OS 4 (Android 13), then Wear OS 5 (Android 14), and finally Wear OS 5.1 (Android 15) — four platform versions, which is a decent run. But that three-year window has closed. So when Google says the watch “remains fully supported,” the honest reading is that Google’s services will keep working with it, not that new software is coming.

For an owner, those are two different things. Your sleep and workout data will keep syncing, which is what the panic was about and it is genuinely resolved. Meanwhile you are wearing a device on a security patch that is now more than a year old, paired to a phone that almost certainly gets monthly ones. That is not a reason to throw the watch away — a wearable’s attack surface is far smaller than a phone’s — but it is the fact to weigh when the next Pixel Watch goes on sale, rather than a scary card that turned out to be a glitch.

What to do now

  1. Nothing urgent. The card was wrong and has been fixed. There is no action required to keep Google Health syncing.
  2. Check what you are actually on. On the watch, open Settings, then System, then About (the exact wording varies a little by Wear OS build) and confirm you see Wear OS 5.1 and the June 2025 patch level. If you are on something older, the 5.1 update should still be offered, though Google has not said so explicitly.
  3. Do not chase an update that does not exist. If the card returns, it is a bug, not a signal that you have missed a release.

If you want a sense of how much of the Pixel Watch experience now arrives outside of full system updates, our earlier look at what Google Play services shipped to Pixel Watch is a useful reference point — increasingly, that is the channel doing the work on older wearables.
