Play Store Now Offers to Add App Widgets Right After You Install

Install an app from the Play Store now and Android may offer, right at that moment, to drop the app’s widgets onto your home screen. The prompt is a small strip that slides up at the bottom of the screen after installation finishes, and it is the shipping version of something Google flagged in a Play Services release note last month. Android Authority found it working and documented how it behaves, along with a second Play Store change that is not ready yet.

How the Play Store widget prompt works

The message tells you widgets are available for the app you just installed and gives you a button. Tapping it does not open some new Play Store interface — it takes you straight to the standard Android widget picker sheet, filtered to that app’s widgets. Functionally it is a shortcut past the long-press-on-the-home-screen, scroll-through-an-alphabetical-list routine that is otherwise the usual way in.

That is genuinely useful, because widget discovery on Android has never had a good entry point. The install flow has never told you an app ships widgets — you have to go looking in a picker you can only reach by long-pressing the home screen. Surfacing them at the exact moment someone has just chosen to install the app is the right moment to ask.

Two caveats worth knowing before you go looking for it

The delivery is weaker than the idea. Android Authority reports that the prompt does not appear for every newly installed app, and — more awkwardly — it appears only once. Miss it, or tap elsewhere while it is on screen, and it does not come back. Nothing is lost, since you can still add widgets the usual way, but a one-shot notification is a strange way to introduce a feature whose entire purpose is helping people who did not know widgets existed.

Alongside it, app description text in Play Store listings now renders noticeably larger, close to the size of the app’s own title. Both of these are live now rather than in testing.

A pause button for downloads is coming, but it does not work yet

Separately, Android Authority found a Pause button attached to in-progress downloads — the obvious use case being stopping a multi-gigabyte game partway through so it does not eat a mobile data allowance in one sitting. This one is not finished. The outlet says it could not get the feature to work as expected and expects Google to keep refining it across coming Play Store updates.

Treat that half accordingly: code found inside an app is a statement of intent, not a release date, and features spotted this way sometimes never ship at all. The widget prompt is the part you can actually go and see today, if the Play Store decides to show it to you.
