Samsung has confirmed that the Galaxy S23 series — including the Galaxy S23, S23+, S23 Ultra, and S23 FE — will receive One UI 9 based on Android 17 as its fourth and final major operating system update. The confirmation effectively sets an end-of-road marker for one of Samsung’s most popular flagship generations.
The Galaxy S23 lineup originally launched in February 2023 with Android 13-based One UI 5.1, while the S23 FE followed in October 2023. Samsung promised four major OS upgrades for these devices — a commitment that predated the company’s current seven-year update policy introduced with the Galaxy S24 series. With Android 14, 15, and 16 already delivered, Android 17 will be the fourth and last.
Galaxy S23 FE’s Update Timeline May Have Been Cut Short
The S23 FE’s situation is particularly notable. The Korean Exynos-powered variant (SM-S711N), which shipped with Android 14-based One UI 6 rather than Android 13, was reportedly slated to receive updates through Android 18. According to GSMArena, a Samsung Korea representative indicated that the device “was initially supposed to receive OS upgrades till Android 18, but plans changed.” That means the S23 FE may be losing one promised update cycle compared to what was originally planned for that specific variant.
The confirmation traces in part to a screenshot shared by tipster Tarun Vats of an alleged Samsung support conversation, in which a representative stated that Android 17 (One UI 9.0) would be the device’s final major OS update. Samsung is reportedly already testing One UI 9.0 for the S23 series, though no stable rollout date has been announced.

The S23 series is not alone. A broader roundup from NokiaMob identifies 19 Samsung Galaxy devices that will receive Android 17 as their final major OS upgrade. The full list spans flagships, foldables, mid-rangers, and tablets:

Owners of these devices will not be left entirely without support after Android 17. Samsung has committed to providing critical security updates for a minimum of one year beyond the final OS upgrade, and incremental One UI 9.5 patches may also arrive during that window.
What This Means for Galaxy S23 Owners
For the millions of S23 series owners still using these phones daily, the practical impact is straightforward: One UI 9 will be the last time your device gets new Android features, UI overhauls, and API-level upgrades. Security patches will continue for at least another year after that, but no Android 18. If you bought the S23 FE specifically because the Exynos variant’s update math suggested one extra cycle, the revised timeline is a genuine downgrade on what was implied at purchase — and Samsung owes its customers a clearer explanation than a support chat screenshot for why those plans changed.
