What actually happens to your Android phone if a border officer asks for it — and what can you do about it in the five minutes before you reach the desk? Border agencies in the US and several other countries can inspect travellers’ devices at a port of entry with far fewer restrictions than police face inside the country, and your phone holds more about you than everything in your luggage combined. This guide covers the concrete settings changes that put your Android phone in its most defensible state before a crossing, all of them verified against Google’s own documentation.

Why the state your Android phone is in actually matters
Android encrypts your data, but not all of it is equally protected at every moment. Google’s own platform documentation splits storage in two: Device Encrypted (DE) storage, which is “available both during Direct Boot mode and after the user has unlocked the device,” and Credential Encrypted (CE) storage, which is “the default storage location and only available after the user has unlocked the device.” Messages, photos, app data — the things you actually care about — live in CE storage.
The practical consequence: a phone that has been powered off and not unlocked since is in a meaningfully stronger state than a phone that is merely locked after you last used it. On a phone that has been unlocked at least once since boot, the keys are already in memory. Google clearly considers this real, because Android’s Advanced Protection includes an automatic reboot after 72 hours locked.
On the legal side, the EFF’s summary of the US position is blunt: border agents conduct “warrantless and usually suspicionless searches” under a border-search exception built for luggage, and as the EFF puts it, “your privacy interests in your phone, laptop, or tablet are extraordinary given the vastness of storage capacity, variety of content, and personal aspects of your life that electronic devices contain.” The specific rules differ by country, and none of what follows is legal advice — it is device hygiene.
1. Turn on Advanced Protection before you travel
This is the single highest-value change, and it takes a minute. Advanced Protection is Android’s bundled hardened mode, introduced with Android 16.
- Open Settings.
- Tap Security & Privacy, then Advanced Protection. (Alternative path: Settings > Google > All services > Advanced Protection.)
- Turn on Device protection. You will need a screen lock already set.
- Decide whether to enable Intrusion Logging, then tap Turn on.
- Restart the phone if prompted.
Per Google’s documentation, this enforces Play Protect so it can’t be switched off, blocks installs from unknown sources, blocks 2G connections on supported devices, enforces HTTPS in Chrome, and adds USB Protection, Failed Authentication Lock, Offline Device Lock and the 72-hour Inactivity Reboot. The USB and reboot behaviours are the ones that matter most in a device-handover scenario.
2. Enable Lockdown, and learn the button combination
Lockdown is Android’s panic switch. Google’s description of it is exact: it “turns off notifications, fingerprint or face recognition unlocking, and Extend Unlock while on your lock screen.” That means the phone can only be opened with your PIN or password — biometrics stop working until you enter it.
- Open Settings.
- Tap Display, then Advanced, then Lock screen display. (If there is no Display entry on your phone, use Security & location > Lock screen preferences. Samsung, Xiaomi and Oppo phones move this around; look for a lock-screen section.)
- Turn on Show lockdown option.
- To use it: press Power and Volume up together, then tap Lockdown.
Google also states the limitation plainly: “Lockdown will only work until you unlock your device.” It is a one-shot state, not a mode you leave on.
3. Use a long PIN or password, not just a pattern or six digits
- Go to Settings > Security > Screen lock.
- Choose Password, or a PIN considerably longer than six digits.
- If you use a long PIN, check whether Auto-confirm is on — it unlocks the moment the digit count matches, which leaks your PIN length to anyone watching.
Patterns are the weakest option here: they are short, and they are trivially readable over your shoulder or from smudges on the glass.
4. Turn off Extend Unlock before you travel
Extend Unlock (formerly Smart Lock) keeps your phone unlocked in “trusted” situations — on-body detection, trusted places, trusted Bluetooth devices — for up to four hours at a time. A trusted Bluetooth device in your bag, or on-body detection while you walk through an airport, is exactly the kind of convenience you do not want at a checkpoint. Find it under Settings > Security (the exact label varies by phone) and switch off every trusted agent before you fly.
5. Power the phone fully off before you reach the desk
Not lock, not airplane mode — a full shutdown. This is the step that puts the device back before first unlock, with CE storage keys unavailable, and it costs you nothing but a boot cycle. If you only do one thing from this guide, do this one.
6. Reduce what is on the device at all
The most reliable protection is data that isn’t there. Before travelling, sign out of accounts you don’t need in transit, remove apps carrying sensitive material, and clear locally cached downloads. Anything synced to a cloud account can be signed back in afterwards. A travel-only profile or a separate cheap device is the stronger version of this for anyone with a genuine reason to worry.
A serious caveat on duress PINs
Some Android distributions, notably GrapheneOS, offer a duress PIN that wipes the device when entered. Understand the risk before relying on one: US federal prosecutors are currently pursuing a case over exactly this, after a traveller’s Pixel wiped during a CBP secondary inspection — we covered that prosecution here. Destroying data during an inspection can create a far bigger legal problem than the data itself. Encryption and a powered-off phone are defensive; a wipe trigger is not.
What this does and doesn’t get you
None of these steps stop an officer from asking for your passcode, and the consequences of refusing vary enormously by country and by your immigration status — a citizen, a resident and a visa holder are not in the same position. What these steps do is make sure that if your phone leaves your hands, it leaves in the strongest state Android can offer rather than unlocked, with biometrics live and four hours of Extend Unlock running. That part is entirely within your control, and it takes five minutes.
